Consumer Fireworks Ban Campaign

Deaths, injuries and fires occur too frequently when untrained consumers and children light fireworks. That's why the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and 21 other prominent health and fire safety advocates have called for a ban on consumer fireworks use before Independence Day celebrations get underway. ACEP joined the Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks in 2003 and planned and participated in press conferences held in Washington, DC every year  through 2006. This year, instead of a press conference, the Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks has produced a video currently appearing on YouTube, featuring the story of Michael Shannon, a three-year-old boy who was killed when a legal consumer firework struck him in the head during a July Fourth family celebration. Michael's parents and sister talk about their memories of Michael, the pain they've endured in the years since his death, and their hope that parents will understand the danger of consumer fireworks. Please view the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2Pfil_2a3I.

Cover the Uninsured Week

Cover the Uninsured

Cover the Uninsured Week 2007 will focus on a clear goal: demonstrating broad support for the reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and the need to cover America's uninsured children. Cover the Uninsured Week 2007 will create a groundswell of activities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia designed to highlight the success of SCHIP, demonstrate the need for public children's health coverage programs, help uninsured children get enrolled in public coverage programs, and continue to press for coverage for all uninsured Americans. Activities will include press conferences, community forums, health and enrollment fairs, seminars for small businesses, campus events, faith-based activities, and more.

Through this effort and with your help, millions of people will be alerted to the importance of SCHIP to our nation's children. You can help get our children covered. Go to www.CoverTheUninsured.org to learn more about the issue and how you can get involved.

Allergic emergencies campaign

Managing Allergic Emergencies

If you or a family member are among the millions of Americans who have allergies and/or asthma, you are at increased risk to have a severe allergic reaction. Each year an estimated 1,500 people die because of anaphylaxis triggered by common substances such as foods, insect stings, medications and latex. Many of these deaths are preventable. ACEP and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology have teamed up to create the Be S.A.F.E. action guide and educational materials to help you manage allergic emergencies. Visit the Web site to learn more about this life-threatening condition and what you can do to prevent or minimize future reactions.

Suicide Prevention

Suicide PreventionACEP and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline are working together to reduce suicide nationwide. The caller will be connected to the nearest available suicide prevention and mental health service provider. Lifeline is the only national suicide prevention and intervention telephone resource funded by the Federal Government. ACEP wants people to know that trained crisis workers are available 24 hours a day/ seven days a week, to assist them in getting the help they need to prevent life-threatening injuries or death by suicide. Risky Drinking Campaign

Risky DrivingACEP and the Emergency Nurses Association have launched the Risky Drinking Campaign to help the public understand where to draw the line between occasional drinking and “risky” drinking. The campaign’s goal is to educate the public on how much is “too much” when it comes to alcohol and why even occasional drinking may put them at a higher risk of a trip to the emergency department. Alcohol-related visits to the emergency department number in the millions each year, and ACEP wants to reduce this number by getting people to think twice before they consume alcohol. The campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  To learn more, visit www.acep.org/riskydrinking.
